Capital Partners (CAP) operates globally across corporate finance, (re-)insurance and derivative solutions in insurance, capital and industrial markets. Within CAP, CAP1.4 carries responsibility for Munich Re’s global weather underwriting and weather risk portfolio, with a strong and growing focus on energy markets.
We are seeking an experienced, decisive and collaborative leader to head the Weather & Agro Zurich team. This role sits at the intersection of energy markets, weather derivatives, portfolio management and people leadership.
Reporting to the Global Head of Weather & AgRisk Partners (CAP1.4), the successful candidate will be accountable for origination, underwriting and portfolio management across Europe, while playing a key role in shaping and steering the global weather portfolio in close partnership with colleagues at Munich Re Trading LLC (Houston) and Munich. You will lead both origination and structuring professionals, set clear strategic direction, and ensure disciplined execution across the full transaction lifecycle – from idea generation and client engagement through structuring, underwriting, hedging and portfolio optimisation.
Your responsibilities
Strategic portfolio & market leadership
- Own the profitable growth, diversification and resilience of the regional weather portfolio, fully aligned with CAP strategy and Ambition 2030
- Shape and execute the European origination strategy with a clear emphasis on energy markets and weather derivatives, in line with global portfolio objectives
- Co-define and steer the global pro-forma portfolio, risk appetite and hedging strategy together with MRTL and CAP management, including peak peril exposure management
Energy & weather derivatives expertise
- Act as a recognised subject-matter leader in energy-linked weather risk and weather derivatives, combining strong energy market understanding with disciplined risk assessment
- Ensure state-of-the-art structuring, pricing and underwriting standards, reflecting best practice across energy commodities, weather indices, and financial risk transfer
- Actively contribute to innovation in products, structures, and portfolio approaches within Munich Re’s New Energy Group
Leadership & people development
- Lead, inspire and develop a diverse, highly specialized team of originators and structuring experts
- Provide clear direction across origination and structuring, ensuring effective collaboration, accountability and high-performance standards
- Empower team members through tailored development plans designed with the goal of enhancing technical literacy and personal growth
- Foster a culture of ownership, curiosity, innovation and psychological safety, enabling the team to perform at its best in a complex and fast-moving market environment
Execution excellence & governance
- Ensure robust end-to-end derivative and insurance transaction execution, including documentation, legal, regulatory and internal governance standards
- Drive operational excellence across the global weather platform, continuously improving processes, tools and ways of working
- Actively promote the use of data, analytics and AI in business development, structuring, portfolio steering, etc.
Stakeholder & thought leadership
- Represent CAP1.4 and the Weather business towards NewRe’s Board of Management and key internal stakeholders (Risk Management, Finance, Legal & Compliance, Controlling)
- Strengthen Munich Re’s positioning as an innovative and trusted partner in energy and weather risk, including industry visibility (e.g. conferences, market forums, publications)
- Increase internal visibility of the global weather platform within Munich Re, particularly towards GIM and adjacent business units
Your profile
- University degree in economics, mathematics, law, finance or a comparable field; strong exposure to energy markets, capital markets and/or risk management
- Deep, hands-on understanding of European energy markets, with proven experience in weather derivatives and energy-linked risk transfer solutions
- Demonstrated ability to lead senior originators and highly technical structuring colleagues, balancing market drive with risk discipline
- Demonstrated ability to understand portfolio‑level risk concepts and apply them in sound commercial and risk‑aware decision‑making
- Proven people leader with the ability to motivate, develop and align diverse experts in an international setup
- High intellectual curiosity, strong analytical and conceptual skills, and a solution-oriented, client-focused mindset
- Excellent communication, influencing and leadership skills across senior internal and external stakeholders
- Openness to innovation, change and new technologies
- Valuing and promoting an inclusive working and learning environment
- Fluent in English, additional languages are an advantage
- Willingness to travel internationally as required
