Primary Objectives:

The Underwriting Assistant plays a key role in supporting the underwriting team by helping to deliver accurate risk assessments and high-quality service to both internal and external stakeholders. Reporting to the Underwriting Support Supervisor, this role supports the day-to-day underwriting and business development operations across regional hubs in Canada.

It’s a great stepping stone into underwriting, offering hands-on experience, exposure to technical tasks, and collaboration across teams—all while contributing to meaningful, client-focused insurance solutions.

 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries from clients and brokers, ensuring a high standard of service.
  • Processing of various transactions; invoicing, and creating policies and reports
  • Directing incoming and outgoing mail and maintaining electronic records and digital correspondence.
  • Process insurance opportunities within your binding authority and escalate cases that require leadership approval.
  • Coordinate with Corporate Underwriters to obtain clarity or approvals for cases that exceed local authority.
  • Support the underwriting of new policies and renewals in line with company guidelines and risk appetite.
  • Stay informed on market trends and HSB’s suite of insurance products to support informed underwriting decisions.
  • Work collaboratively with BDRs and Underwriters on large regional accounts, assisting in broker communications, negotiations, and the delivery of tailored solutions.

 

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education required; college diploma or university degree preferred, ideally in business, finance, insurance, or a related field.
  • Actively pursuing or completion of the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation or an equivalent insurance credential is a strong asset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a client-focused attitude.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Basic understanding of insurance and underwriting processes is preferred, along with a demonstrated willingness to learn and grow.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with underwriting systems and platforms is advantageous.
  • Self-motivated, solution-oriented, and committed to continuous learning.
  • Bilingual capabilities (English and French) is an asset.
