Primary Objectives:
HSB Canada’s Engineering Department is our center of competence for technical consultancy and risk assessment of highly exposed risks across North America. Our multidisciplinary team of experienced engineers assess operational risks, equipment breakdown (EB), property loss control, and inherent hazards across a wide range of industrial operations. Our expertise supports Underwriters, Claims Adjusters, Brokers, and Insureds in understanding risk exposures and developing practical loss prevention strategies.
We are seeking a self-directed Engineer with experience in property risk assessment and loss prevention to join our team as an Account Engineer specializing in Property. This role offers an opportunity for both developing and experienced property risk professionals to apply their technical expertise in a consultative environment, working closely with underwriters, brokers, and insured organizations to evaluate complex property risks, provide technical guidance, and support meaningful loss prevention outcomes across a diverse portfolio of industrial and commercial operations.
Job Responsibilities

Develop and maintain a strong understanding of assigned accounts, including their operations, property exposures, critical equipment, risk controls, and loss prevention priorities.

Manage the engineering assessment of assigned accounts, including reviewing technical information, evaluating changes in risk, identifying information gaps, and coordinating engineering activities.

Plan and conduct property risk assessments at industrial, commercial, and renewable energy facilities across North America, with a particular focus on hydroelectric generation and related power infrastructure.

Evaluate significant property loss exposures, including construction, occupancy and process hazards, fire protection, natural hazards, critical equipment, operational controls, and business interruption potential.

Develop clear engineering opinions, risk assessments, loss estimates, and practical loss-prevention recommendations to support underwriting and client decision-making.

Prepare and present engineering findings, risk opinions, and recommendations to underwriters, insureds, brokers, and internal decision-making panels, and work collaboratively with stakeholders to drive meaningful risk improvement.

Contribute to HSB’s technical capabilities through the development and improvement of engineering guidance, assessment tools, training materials, and technical publications.
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in engineering or Fire Science from an accredited university.

Exceptional written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical matters clearly, present credible engineering opinions, and influence decisions with underwriting panels, senior leaders, brokers, and insureds.

12 or more years of relevant professional experience in property risk engineering, property loss prevention, fire protection, industrial risk management, or related field.

Experience assessing property risks within industrial or power-generation environments, including the application of recognized loss-prevention standards and practices. Experience with hydroelectric power or other renewable energy operations is highly desirable.

Strong knowledge of property loss exposures, fire protection, natural hazards, business interruption, and recognized loss prevention practices.

Willingness and ability to travel throughout North America and conduct site visits at industrial and commercial facilities as required.

Previous insurance industry experience is required. Candidates without insurance experience who demonstrate strong technical capabilities and relevant professional experience are encouraged to apply.

Professional Engineering designation, fire protection education, and bilingual proficiency in English and French are considered assets.

Our base salary range for this role is between $119,000 and $139,000 per year, plus an opportunity for an annual company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. The salary estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for candidates hired in this position. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, and comparison to internal equity.
