Manager, Tax (Insurance)

Reporting to the VP, Tax, the Manager, Tax (Insurance) will lead the preparation, review and oversight of the preparation of income and commodity tax provisions and returns for the Life insurance company and its related service entity.
This role includes direct responsibility for supervising one staff member and ensuring the timely, accurate, and audit ready delivery of core tax compliance processes, while also contributing to advisory and strategic initiatives.
The role is expected to expand over time to include broader oversight and leadership responsibilities, supporting progression towards Director level scope.
Tax Compliance and Governance including Tax Audits
- Manage and review quarterly and annual income tax provisions (IFRS) and supporting schedules
- Oversee preparation and filing of income tax and commodity tax returns
- Analyze provision to return differences
- Maintain tax continuity schedules and tax rate analyses
- Ensure all workpapers are complete, well-supported, and audit-ready

- Lead tax audits and manage responses to auditor and tax authority queries
- Maintain fully supported, audit-defensible documentation
- Develop strong relationships with tax authorities

Team Leadership
- Manage and develop one staff member, including performance management and development planning
- Provide timely, thorough technical review and feedback
- Ensure work produced by direct report meets quality, completeness, and documentation standards
Strategic
- Research and analyze technical tax matters (including insurance taxation)
- Support business initiatives and regulatory changes
- Contribute to key projects (IFRS, GLoBE, investments, process changes)
- Identifies and implements process improvements
- Enhances documentation, controls, and efficiency of tax processes
Qualifications:
- Post secondary education and recognized accounting accreditation (CPA, CA/CPA, CMA, CGA)
- Completion of (or in 3rd year) CICA In-depth tax course or Master of Tax is required
- 5+ years Canadian tax experience required
- Public Accounting experience and Insurance or financial services taxation is strongly preferred
- Prior experience supervising and reviewing the work of others
- Strong technical tax expertise, with the ability to analyze complex issues and prepare clear, well-supported, audit-defensible documentation
- Continuous improvement mindset, including identifying process enhancements and leveraging technology to improve efficiency
- Advanced skills in Excel and strong proficiency in MS Suite and Taxprep software

Our base salary range for this role is between $121,000 and $156,000 per year, plus an opportunity for an annual company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. The salary estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for candidates hired in this position. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to internal equity.
