Primary Objectives:

Reporting to the Manager – Accounting Operations & Systems, the Accountant is responsible for supporting the monthly close process, as well as supporting financial planning & analysis and contributing to various regulatory filings. The Accountant will work cross-functionally with other internal teams including Finance, Actuarial Services, and Claims, as well as other key stakeholders to ensure a timely and accurate closing. The successful candidate will have strong analytical skills, be comfortable with learning new systems and have a solid understanding of accounting.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Month-end close:
    • Ensure all cash entries are processed for the month on a timely basis
    • Prepare and post claims results from the policy administration system
    • Identify and record related party transactions
    • Prepare monthly management reports related to claims activity and cash movement
    • Perform financial analysis, investigate variances, and provide explanations
    • Complete month-end close process in accordance with internal and external requirements

 

  • Quarterly/annual reporting:
    • Compile and validate data for P&C filings
    • Review / validate contingent commission calculations
    • Summarize underwriting activity for reporting to internal / external actuaries
    • Coordinate quarterly IBNR and litigation reserve reviews and record the reserve changes
    • Prepare and maintain selected balance sheet account reconciliations

 

  • Backup and other support:
    • Master data maintenance in accounting system
    • Support the submission of OSFI P&C/AMF/BC Filings
    • Participate in finance transformation projects
    • Ad hoc requests from management

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Commerce or equivalent from an accredited university
  • Recognized accounting designation, preferably Chartered Professional Accountant
  • 3+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience, preferably in the insurance industry
  • Understanding of GAAP and IFRS, knowledge of IFRS 17 is considered an asset
  • Excellent verbal, and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment
  • Strong analytical and accounting skills, high level of attention to detail
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision

Our base salary range for this role is between $84,000 and $99,000 per year , plus an opportunity for an annual company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. The salary estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for candidates hired in this position. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to internal equity.
