The Surety Underwriter will be responsible for profitably underwriting treaty and facultative business, while coordinating underwriting and marketing activities for new and renewal opportunities in line with the Credit & Surety team’s risk appetite and client strategy.
Responsibilities
- Independently underwrite surety reinsurance treaty business, special acceptances, and facultative opportunities to determine appropriate terms, conditions, and structures. Provide expert recommendations to team lead/management to achieve successful results.
- Work closely with pricing analyst providing underwriting expertise, insights, and in-depth client knowledge to assure that treaty pricing achieves overall financial and portfolio goals.
- Collaborate closely with credit & surety team members, claims and business development to achieve overall portfolio goals/objectives.
- Proven team player who collaborates cross-functionally with colleagues, engages in industry meetings to stay ahead of market trends, and leads or supports high-impact projects that shape and drive underwriting strategy, managing or materially supporting projects of strategic importance.
- Review contract and endorsement wordings and ensure accuracy, in conjunction with contract writers.
- Actively undertake underwriting file reviews (whether in-person or virtually), and provide audit reports, as required.
- Provide supervision, advice, training, coaching, and mentoring to less experienced underwriters to support their growth and development.
- Demonstrate excellent negotiation, communication, and presentation skills to build strong relationships with brokers, clients, and colleagues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher. Advanced designations, CPCU, ARe preferred.
- At least 10+ years of experience in (re)insurance, with 5+ years of surety related underwriting, preferably within primary U.S. Surety.
- In-depth knowledge of primary Surety principles and procedures.
- In-depth knowledge of reinsurance principles and procedures preferred. Candidates with strong primary Surety knowledge should not hesitate to apply.
- Thorough knowledge of financial statements and financial analysis.
- Ability to explain complex transaction structures to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong interpersonal and social skills as well as strong negotiation, communication and presentation skills
- Willingness to travel for audits and clients and broker visits (approx. 25-35% of time)
- Ability to mentor junior underwriters and share technical knowledge across the team
- Interest in long-term growth and stability within the role
The Company is open to considering candidates in numerous locations, including NYC and Princeton. The salary range posted below reflects market variations across various locations. This role is designated for either Princeton or NYC and reflects multiple geographies. The offer will be adjusted per geography.
The base salary range anticipated for this position is $232,400 - $370,600, plus opportunity for company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. In addition, the company makes available a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k match, retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO).
The salary estimate is adjusted to reflect the varying market conditions across different locations, with the with the higher end being more aligned with the New York City job market. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range.
