The Head of Group Marketing Communications is a senior leadership role with a dual remit combining global functional leadership with direct, business‑facing marketing and communications responsibility.
First, the role serves as the global leader of the Marketing Center of Excellence within Group Communications. In this capacity, the role defines the global marketing strategy and advances the function through coordinated planning, performance management, capability development, and the implementation of shared standards, frameworks, and processes across regions.
Second, the role leads the marketing and communications support model for business divisions across Munich Re Specialty, Life/Health Reinsurance, and most P&C Reinsurance businesses. The role delivers commercial impact through a combination of direct leadership and matrixed coordination across Group Communications, regional teams, and business stakeholders. The role is a senior marketing and communications point of contact for relevant Board of Management members.
The role reports to the Head of Group Communications, based in Munich, and operates at the intersection of enterprise strategy and business execution in a complex and global environment. Being responsible with four direct reports in Munich, London and Princeton for over 60 employees worldwide.
Responsibilities
Global Marketing Functional Leadership
- Define and lead the global marketing strategy across Group Communications.
- Advance the marketing function through global planning, performance management, capability building, and continuous feedback from internal stakeholders.
- Establish and evolve shared standards, frameworks, and processes that improve consistency, transparency, and effectiveness across regions.
- Drive cross‑regional alignment on priorities, ways of working, measurement approaches, and the systematic sharing of best practices.
- Strengthen core marketing capabilities, including marketing intelligence, measurement, digital effectiveness, AI, and marketing automation, in close collaboration with the global brand, digital, and production functions.
- Lead and develop a high‑performing global marketing community across teams, regions, and business divisions.
- Own and continuously evolve internal client sentiment measurement to assess and improve the effectiveness of business partnership.
- Build frameworks for career growth, succession planning, and talent development to ensure a strong and diverse pipeline of future marketing leaders.
- Maintain strong connectivity with, and act as an advocate for, Group Communications Centers of Excellence in the regions.
Business‑Facing Marketing and Communications Leadership
- Lead the integrated marketing and communications support model for Munich Re Specialty, Global Life and Health, and most P&C reinsurance divisions.
- Set strategic direction and priorities for business‑facing marketing and communications activities in direct support of commercial objectives and business strategy.
- Translate business priorities into clear, actionable marketing and communications plans, investments, and execution roadmaps.
- Oversee the development and execution of integrated marketing and communications initiatives, campaigns, and business‑enabling programs.
- Ensure coordinated, high‑quality delivery across the full marketing and communications ecosystem through direct leadership and influenced-based coordination.
- Act as a senior partner to business leaders and Board of Management members, serving as a strategic point of contact for relevant topics.
- Develop business cases and executive‑level materials for critical business discussions and decision‑making forums.
- Represent Group Communications on internal and external boards, as designated.
Leadership, Operating Model, and Accountability
- Deliver outcomes through a combination of direct leadership and influence‑based coordination across Group Communications, regional teams, and business stakeholders.
- Lead designated teams directly while providing leadership across a broader network of contributors operating within a matrixed structure.
- Align priorities, clarify accountability, and drive execution across complex global interfaces.
- Balance enterprise‑level functional consistency with business‑specific needs to ensure both strategic coherence and effective execution.
- Be accountable for budget stewardship, resource allocation, organizational effectiveness, and talent outcomes within scope.
- As a Board Member for MRAS and U.S. P&C, help ensure regional marketing and communications teams are optimally positioned to support business priorities.
Qualifications
Successful candidates will possess the following skills/capabilities:
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Sales, Business, or other relevant field.
- 15+ years of relevant experience leading marketing teams and developing and executing marketing strategies, campaigns, and go-to-market programs that support growth, increased share of wallet, and strengthen brand awareness.
- Strong C-suite / executive level experience required.
- Proven ability to lead in a complex, matrixed, and cross-regional environment.
- High degree of emotional intelligence, with the ability to lead with empathy, self‑awareness, and sound judgment while building engagement across senior stakeholders and teams.
- A bias toward action, with a track record of translating strategy into decisive execution, driving momentum, and delivering results in fast‑paced and complex environments.
- Strong strategic and analytical thinking, with the ability to translate business priorities into practical marketing and communications action.
- Cross-functional experience across marketing, communications, finance, and operations-related topics.
- Strong business judgment, solution orientation, and resourcefulness, with the ability to operate effectively in ambiguity.
- Highly collaborative leadership style with strong influence, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop executive-level materials and present in senior forums.
- Experience leading and developing diverse teams, including internal staff, freelancers, and external agencies.
Additional Role Requirements
- Role must reside in Princeton.
- Ability to travel approximately 25-35% as required.
The Company is open to considering candidates in Princeton, NJ. The salary range posted below applies to the Company’s Princeton location.
The base salary range anticipated for this position is $XXX,XXX- $XXX,XXX plus opportunity for company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay. In addition, the company makes available a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k match, retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO).
The salary estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for candidates hired in this position in Princeton, NJ. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range.
