We’re looking for an experienced Underwriting Manager to oversee E&S Casualty Construction risks across general contractors, trade contractors, and complex project-specific accounts. In this role, you’ll inspire and guide a specialized underwriting team, drive strategic broker relationships, and execute innovative production and underwriting strategies to achieve growth and profitability goals. You’ll combine leadership with hands-on underwriting expertise, collaborate across business units, and represent our brand at key industry events—all while ensuring governance and excellence in every aspect of the construction segment.

 

Responsibilities:

In this position you will:

 

  • Lead, motivate, and coordinate an underwriting team specializing in E&S Casualty Construction risks, including general contractors, trade contractors, and project specific (OI/PS/CIP) construction projects, and indirectly to broader underwriting group for renewable construction.
  • Drive the distribution strategy by cultivating new and existing broker relationships within the construction segment, including development and execution of production strategies and business plans to implement and maximize growth objectives and rate goals.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the underwriting strategy for construction- casualty business, ensuring alignment with profitability and risk management objectives.
  • Measure and optimize portfolio progress by reviewing and analyzing underwriting data, monitoring industry best practices, and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement in the construction space.
  • Underwrite, market, quote, bind, and retain a profitable book of E&S casualty construction business, operating within granted authority and making referrals to underwriting leadership as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with other Munich Re business units to deliver holistic solutions for construction clients as opportunities for collaboration arise.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong professional relationships with wholesale and retail brokers specializing in construction risks.
  • Assist in day-to-day operations and projects as assigned, which could have client, business group, divisional, and corporate impact.
  • Represent the Munich Re brand and Munich Re Specialty Insurance at client events, seminars, and industry conferences focused on construction.
  • Maintain underwriting governance across the team.

 

Qualifications:

Successful candidates will possess the following experience/skills/qualifications:

 

  • Excellent underwriting, marketing, and analytical skills developed through 10+ years of experience in casualty construction underwriting.
  • Strong ability to lead, manage, and effectively influence peers.
  • Advanced working knowledge of construction-related GL products, insurance concepts, underwriting processes and procedures, laws and regulations, terminology, and principles related to strategic planning and industry trends.
  • Successful track record of developing and maintaining strong relationships with retail and wholesale brokers in the construction segment.
  • Tech-savviness and willingness to experiment with and learn new technologies.
  • Ability to think strategically and function tactically.
  • Exceptional communication skills that energize and engage brokers, clients, and colleagues, and the ability to convey a vision and client-focused solutions.
  • Ability to present and negotiate complex agreements with brokers.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to travel 20%-30%.

 

The Company is open to considering candidates in numerous locations, including Chicago (IL), New York City (NYC), Philadelphia (PA), Hartford (CT), and Princeton (NJ), San Francisco (CA),  Scottsdale (AZ), Atlanta (GA), Boston (MA). The salary range posted below reflects market variations across various locations. The offer will be adjusted per geography.

 

The base salary range anticipated for this position is $226,900 - $348,100, plus opportunity for company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay.  In addition, the company makes available a variety of benefits to employees, including health insurance coverage, an employee wellness program, life and disability insurance, 401k match, retirement savings plan, paid holidays and paid time off (PTO). 

 

The salary estimate is adjusted to reflect the varying market conditions across different locations, with the higher end being more aligned with the NYC/San Francisco job market. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range.
