Senior Software Engineer

Location: New York City; must be able to work a hybrid schedule from our NYC office.

Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior/Staff Software Engineer with deep expertise in Python and modern backend frameworks to join the alitheia team. You will build scalable, secure and high-performance APIs and services that power data-driven solutions. The role supports mission-critical systems that use artificial intelligence, electronic health records and other complex, sensitive medical data to make it easier for people to obtain essential life insurance coverage.

This position sits within a small, high-impact team building an advanced solution for medical risk assessment. It offers substantial opportunity to shape a new solution, ship product quickly and see immediate impact.

Key Responsibilities:

• Help shape API architecture for real-time decisioning using complex medical data.
• Collaborate with data scientists, underwriters, customer success partners and product managers to develop and deliver the product roadmap.
• Optimize backend performance and scalability for large volumes of structured and unstructured health data.
• Adapt the product as the use of machine learning models and large language models evolves.
• Build maintainable software, write unit and integration tests, and implement automated testing.
• Participate in code reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of development practices.

Qualifications:

• Degree or equivalent background in Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Physics or a related discipline.
• Professional experience developing backend software with Python.
• Strong understanding of software development lifecycle best practices.
• Experience with API design tools and frameworks such as Swagger, OpenAPI and FastAPI.
• Experience with cloud computing and Kubernetes or similar orchestration tools.
• Experience with containerization tools such as Docker.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL and ORM libraries such as SQLAlchemy.
• Experience with load testing, latency profiling and backend performance optimization.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.
• Experience working with new and complex data sources.
• Interest in applying emerging technologies, including large language models, in production environments.
• Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering, data science, underwriting, product and customer success teams.

The base salary range anticipated for this position is $171,000 – $198,000, plus an opportunity for an annual company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay.
