Managing Director, MRS-GM Italy

 

Munich Re Specialty was formed as a stand-alone division in 2023, bringing together the wider Munich Re Group’s primary specialty insurance businesses. Building on strong foundations in the UK and the US, Munich Re Specialty – Global Markets (MRSGM) is executing an ambitious strategy to expand its footprint across key European markets.

 

As part of this growth journey, we are seeking a Managing Director, MRS‑GM Italy, to establish, lead, and grow our presence in the Italian market.

 

This is a rare opportunity to play a pivotal role in building Munich Re Specialty’s Italian platform from the ground up. As Managing Director, you will define and execute the local strategy, build a high‑performing team, and act as the face and voice of Munich Re Specialty in Italy.

 

Working in close collaboration with senior leaders across Europe and the wider Munich Re Group, you will combine entrepreneurial drive with disciplined underwriting and operational excellence to deliver sustainable and profitable growth, while upholding Munich Re’s reputation for integrity and quality.

 

This role is ideally suited to an influential, market‑facing leader who enjoys building businesses, developing teams, and shaping strategy within a global specialty insurance environment.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

Strategic & Business Leadership

 

  • Create and execute a comprehensive, scalable, and sustainable strategy for the Italian market, aligned with MRS‑GM’s European and global objectives.
  • Establish Munich Re Specialty’s presence in Italy, growing the business to EUR 100m+ within five years, with a focus on the middle market.
  • Implement an efficient and scalable operating model that supports long‑term growth and future European expansion.
  • Act as the face and voice of MRS‑GM in Italy, embodying and representing the Munich Re Specialty brand in the market.

 

Market Development & Client Engagement

 

  • Develop and maintain long‑term relationships with global, regional, and local brokers, MGAs, and key clients to drive new business and strengthen existing partnerships.
  • Actively monitor market developments, competitor activity, and emerging opportunities to enhance MRS‑GM’s market positioning.
  • Proactively engage with internal stakeholders locally and internationally (including London and Munich) to ensure alignment with underwriting standards and best practices.

 

Leadership & People Development

 

  • Recruit, develop, and lead a local team, starting with underwriters, fostering a culture of performance, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Set clear objectives and support staff development through continuous performance conversations, coaching, and knowledge sharing.
  • Ensure that all team members meet operational, regulatory, and compliance requirements.

 

Governance, Performance & Risk Management

 

  • Ensure that underwriting, distribution, and operational activities align with the Italian business plan and global underwriting strategy.
  • Oversee portfolio performance, ensuring disciplined underwriting, regulatory compliance, and sustainable profitability.
  • Conduct peer reviews and ensure adherence to delegated authorities, company procedures, and compliance standards.
  • Produce management reports and insights as required to support decision‑making and performance tracking.

 

 

Knowledge and Skills

 

  • Extensive, proven experience as a senior business leader within the primary insurance market in Italy, with a strong track record of delivering profitable growth.
  • Highly regarded and well‑connected within the Italian insurance market, with an established portfolio of senior broker relationships.
  • Strong understanding of operating within a regulated financial services environment.
  • Entrepreneurial, resilient, and comfortable building operations in an evolving or greenfield setup.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to articulate and execute ambitious business plans while inspiring teams to deliver results.
  • Strong commercial judgment, solution‑oriented mindset, and ability to balance innovation with governance.
  • Credibility at senior stakeholder level, underpinned by integrity, professionalism, and sound decision‑making.
  • International mindset with strong people leadership, change management, and emotional intelligence.
  • Fluent in Italian and English, written and spoken.
