To strengthen our legal team, we are seeking a qualified and motivated Legal Consultant in Property/Casualty Underwriting. You will join a committed team with diverse backgrounds and experience across multiple lines of business and markets. In this role, you will work closely with underwriters and managers on legal matters and support negotiations with clients, brokers, and their lawyers. 
The advertised position reports to the head of the  department and is based in Munich.


YOUR JOB

  • Provide legal support to underwriters and managers on all reinsurance and insurance related contract law matters, including advising on contract issues, drafting legal agreements and clauses, reviewing non-disclosure/confidentiality agreements and ensuring adherence to internal guidelines. 
  • Influence and ensure high-quality contract wordings within the business area by leveraging Munich Re’s wording governance tools, including future AI-augmented applications
  • Collaborate closely with Claims units in London, Munich, or Canada on complex claims
  • Train underwriters on relevant legal topics and guidelines, and actively contribute as a member of our internal global (legal) expert network
  • Translate lessons learned from real-life cases (e.g., claims) into more effective reinsurance agreements and contract clauses  
  • Support negotiations with clients and brokers in close coordination with underwriters and client managers

 

YOUR PROFILE

  • Legal education (1st and 2nd state examination) or an equivalent degree from another jurisdiction, a degree from an Anglo-Saxon jurisdiction is a plus (e.g. LLB, LLM and/or qualifications or certified to work as Solicitor/Barrister)
  • Knowledge of (re)insurance contract law, combined with experience in underwriting or another area of (re)insurance, would be a clear advantage.
  • Confident in advising and applying guidelines and internal and external regulations
  • Strong ability to understand complex legal and economic concepts and processes
  • Ability to find the right balance between legal accuracy and pragmatism
  • Strong willingness to apply future AI-augmented applications in contract assessment and design
  • Team-oriented but self-confident appearance, with a preference for direct interaction with clients and brokers 
  • Proactive and enthusiastic about driving business initiatives, taking responsibility, and supporting teams with guidance 
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken
