Underwriting Oversight Portfolio Manager

 

Drive insights, discipline, and optimisation across the Underwriting Portfolio. The role supports strategic underwriting decisions through robust data analysis, cycle management and regular performance monitoring and review of return of Capital. Collaborate with Senior Underwriters, Actuarial, and Risk functions to deliver sustainable underwriting profitability in line with business plan objectives.

 

Responsibilities:

 

Portfolio Oversight & Performance Management

  • Analyse underwriting performance across classes and segments, identifying trends and key levers for maintaining or improving profitability.
  • Monitor performance against plan, providing regular reporting and commentary on key outliers.
  • Develop and maintain real time performance and analysis dashboards to support decision-making at class and portfolio levels.
  • Support regular performance reviews, ensuring ongoing alignment between underwriting strategy and portfolio outcomes.

 

Strategic Portfolio Optimisation

  • Partner with underwriting teams to challenge and refine business mix, line size, and risk appetite to optimise capital utilisation and return on capital.
  • Assess the impact of new business opportunities, product development, and market changes on portfolio composition and profitability.
  • Provide insight into portfolio diversification, aggregation, and reinsurance strategy considerations.

 

Governance & Frameworks

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of portfolio management frameworks, ensuring consistency, transparency, and alignment with group and Lloyd’s requirements.
  • Ensure all portfolio analyses and recommendations are underpinned by sound methodology and compliant with internal governance standards.
  • Make sure that key stakeholders understand any key dependencies in your findings and limitations are clearly communicated and understood.

 

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Work closely with Senior Underwriters, Oversight, Actuarial, Risk, Exposure management, Claims, Finance, and Operations to deliver well rounded portfolio insights.
  • Present findings and recommendations to senior management and relevant committees.
  • Effectively manage the Performance Management analysts, supporting their development.
  • Support the objectives and aspirations of the Underwriting Oversight team and Business Management function.

 

Knowledge and Skills

 

  • Degree in a quantitative or business-related field; progress towards ACII, FIA, or CFA qualification advantageous
  • Comprehensive understanding of London market practices and risk environment.
  • Proven experience in reviewing, analysing and managing Underwriting portfolios.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, insurance financials, and KPIs
  • Comprehensive understanding of cycle management and the key levers for improvement.
  • Understanding of business strategy, planning and key support functions across Insurance.
  • Effective people management skills.
  • Strong experience in dealing with key stakeholders.
  • Commercial acumen and ability to challenge constructively within a high-performance underwriting environment
  • Ideally experience in multiple specialty lines of insurance
