Senior Legal Counsel

Hybrid working – Commutable distance to London, Manchester or Birmingham local office.

 

We are looking for a senior lawyer with an extensive litigation background in insurance coverage in UK and Lloyd’s to join our growing Legal Team based in London.

 

As a Senior Legal Counsel of the Munich Re Specialty- Global Markets Legal Team, you will be a trusted advisor to the business on cross-disciplinary legal issues within the MRSG Group.  This will include strategic projects, distribution contracts, underwriting, wordings, (re)insurance, service contracts, non-claims litigation, regulatory and compliance support as well as assisting the business with day-to-day legal questions on a broad range of subjects.

 

You will be a subject matter expert in (re)insurance coverage/litigation, experienced in negotiating Lloyd’s and Company market wordings/clauses and contracts spanning a wide range of property and casualty and specialty lines of business as well as advising on complex legal and regulatory issues as and when they arise.

Responsibilities 

  • Serving as a subject matter expert legal resource to all legal entities across Munich Re Specialty- Global Markets by providing comprehensive and timely legal advice and training to internal stakeholders including claims and underwriting, you will:-
  • Advise on (re)insurance law issues across MR Primary Specialty GSI4 Group globally including wordings, delegation and distribution contracts.
  • Advise commercial and product teams on wordings and related governance processes, including regulatory considerations for new products/emerging areas.
  • Provide strategic advice on complex legal queries with an emphasis on providing solutions that balance legal and regulatory risk with commercial objectives.
  • Advise the business on non-claims litigation, ECO claims, investigations and other contentious matters.
  • Provide expert advice in commercial and corporate contract issues to include optimising approach to intra-group agreements and third party service contracts.  
  • Provide legal and regulatory advice on strategic projects across the MRSG group of companies.
  • Work with and support Compliance on regulatory matters and complex sanctions underwriting and claims issues. 
  • Provide legal support to Munich Re Specialty Global Markets’ UK and international   distribution channels including international offices and in relation to Lloyd’s Europe.
  • Work with the Corporate Underwriting Department in Head Office in Germany to ensure all relevant group guidelines understood and implemented across MRSG.
  • Provide advice to and liaise with Wordings Experts to maintain wordings and processes in accordance with group wide policies.
  • Develop strategy to enhance processes aimed at achieving consistency and streamlining provision of legal advice.
  • Provide training, develop template contracts and share relevant knowledge across the business. 
  • Participate, and lead where appropriate, in London Market initiatives where required
  • Help drive forward good Conduct for the business to deliver the best outcomes for customers / policyholders.
  • Understand all appropriate lines of escalation and the responsibilities of the Product Conduct Risk Strategy Group (PCRSG), Underwriting & Claims Sub Committee (UCSC), ExCo and Board for Conduct Risk.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Extensive cross jurisdictional insurance litigation/coverage experience. 
  • Legal credentials – University degree with high academic achievement. English or common-law jurisdiction senior qualified lawyer 12+PQE with experience in private practice (insurance) and in-house preferably in a Lloyd’s Managing Agent.  Dual/additional legal qualifications are desirable/advantageous
  • Research and analysis - ability to provide complete and comprehensive research whilst delivering crisp, targeted and on-point analysis in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Effective communication in writing and face-to-face with key stakeholders -in particular underwriters and senior management.
  • Strong drafting and negotiation skills to develop standard form and bespoke documentation and contracts.
  • Communication and negotiation skills- excellent verbal and written communication, collaboration, negotiation and presentation skills.  Able to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of sophistication.
  • Comprehensive understanding of legislative, regulatory and competitive environment including consumer products.
  • Understand MRSG business and growth strategy.
  • University Degree and/or relevant professional qualification
