We are looking for a motivated and technically proficient Underwriting professional to join our Life & Health team in Kuala Lumpur. This role reports to the Head of Underwriting.

You will play a key role in assessing and managing risks, fostering, and deepening client relationships, supporting product initiatives, and contributing to Munich Re’s standing reputation as a global leader in reinsurance underwriting excellence.

Your Role

  • Evaluate life, disability, and living benefit risks—including medically substandard and financially complex cases—aligned with agreed service standards, underwriting philosophy, and Group guidelines.
  • Provide clear, well-reasoned underwriting decisions within assigned approval limits, ensuring case turnaround times meet internal quality standards.
  • Support client quotations and product offerings, including reviewing client underwriting rules, authorities, selection criteria, and addendum to treaties.
  • Contribute to underwriting workshops and the development or enhancement of underwriting tools, systems, and methodologies.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline underwriting workflows, enhance process efficiency, and refine acceptance criteria to strengthen risk management.
  • Promote global underwriting best practices through client engagement, training, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare analyses of case trends, risk patterns, operational KPIs, and other underwriting insights to support management reporting and business decisions.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through regular discussions, reviews, and participation in industry forums or client events.
  • Support client audits, review client underwriting manuals, and rules, and recommend enhancements to improve selection quality and treaty compliance.
  • Maintain and expand technical knowledge through continuous learning, professional designation pursuit, and proactive skill enhancement.

Your Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Pharmacy, Science or other related fields
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of relevant life insurance/reinsurance underwriting experience
  • Professional underwriting qualifications (ALU, FALU, FLMI, etc.) or ongoing progress toward them.
  • Strong understanding of mortality and morbidity risks, disease progression, diagnostic protocols, and medical testing.
  • Sound knowledge of insurance/reinsurance products, underwriting frameworks, regulatory environments, critical illness definitions, and market norms for maximum coverage etc.
  • Experience in evaluating medically substandard and financially complex cases; familiarity with nontraditional or data driven underwriting approaches is desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a client centric mindset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with intercultural agility and the ability to work with diverse regional clients.
