Munich Re of Africa is seeking to employ a Senior Life Insurance Underwriter.  You will join our Life Underwriting Solutions team reporting to the Chief Underwriter. The position can be based either in Johannesburg or Cape Town as we have offices in both locations. 

Your Role:

•    Risk assessment of complicated and high value life insurance applications following Munich Re’s underwriting standards and risk appetite
•    Support Munich Re’s claims team by providing input into complicated claims and   offering reconstructed underwriting opinions
•    Present training sessions to Munich Re staff or those of its clients
•    Conduct research and development for Munich Re or its clients upon request
•    Establish and maintain good relationships with the Underwriting decision makers in the life insurance industry
•    Provide advice to clients with regard to international and local best practices
•    Market and promote any of the services offered by Munich Re to its current and prospective clients
•    Support the Chief Underwriter and other teams in our business on projects to pursue Munich Re's strategic goals

Your profile:


•    Tertiary qualification 
•    A track record in the life industry
•    Minimum 15 years life underwriting experience, of which at least 10 years must have been with a direct insurer(s) operating in the South African market
•    Outstanding medical and financial skills
•    It is important that you can demonstrate experience in the handling of high value or complicated cases
•    Ability to analyse data to inform business practices and approaches

We will consider the following skills advantageous.

•    Prior experience at a Reinsurer or Group Insurer
•    Prior experience using Munich Re's UW manual – MIRA
