Head of Data Science - Ops & Claims

Lead a team of data scientists to develop and deploy AI and advanced analytics solutions that transform operational efficiency and claims outcomes. This role is responsible for translating business priorities into scalable AI use cases, driving end-to-end delivery across the AI value chain, and ensuring measurable impact across operations and claims functions.
Remain updated on the corporate information architecture, and state-of-the-art data science tools, as well as industry trends in the open-source world. Coordinate with business partners, IT and other Data, AA&AI colleagues to assist in the identification of data and technology needs and requirements as they pertain to HSB’s Machine Learning and AI activities.
Recruit and develop talent and support their professional growth in the fast-paced machine learning and AI world. Support a continuous learning, hands-on environment, and encourage all team members to participate in internal (HSB/Munich Re) and external seminars and conferences. Continually identify process improvement and efficiency opportunities across the Data Science teams.
Education and Experience:
- Master’s degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Physics, Engineering or related field is required or equivalent work experience.
- 10+ years’ experience in predictive analytics, data mining or statistical analysis, and management of complex analytic based projects, preferred.
- 5+ years’ experience in ML Ops management and technology implementation
- Insurance domain and product knowledge including actuarial experience preferred
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong leadership and team building skills
- Demonstrated verbal and written communications expertise
- Programming experience in Python and R
- Knowledge of statistical learning, machine learning and general deep learning and large language model (LLM) methods
- Experience with big data architecture, Databricks and Azure cloud computing is preferred
- Familiarity with text mining and other unstructured data such as images and sensor readings
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically
- Strong logical reasoning skills and business intelligence
- Analytical skills and strong organizational abilities
- Problem-solving aptitude
- Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies, technology directions, and strategic application to business needs
- Guide business use data to drive high performance and quality
- Solid experience in data analysis and reporting
- Ability to translate raw data into valuable business insights.
- Ability to coach team to higher level of technical proficiency
- Leadership development of direct reports to better assist in driving business objectives and plan for succession
- Possess solid industry experience
- Excellent presenting, discussing, negotiating project approval with C-level executives’ skills
- Ability to create proposals
