We are seeking an experienced, full-time Associate Counsel to join the Legal & Compliance Team of the Shared Services division in our Hartford, CT office. This role will report to the Senior Associate General Counsel and support Hartford Steam Boiler’s innovative and expanding insurance, reinsurance, and technology business.

 

This is an entry-level attorney position within the organization. The Associate Counsel will work under the direction of more senior attorneys and support legal advice and recommendations to executives and management on matters of limited complexity. The role may also handle more routine legal matters directly, while continuing to develop deeper knowledge of the company’s business operations and one or more legal specialties.

The successful candidate will be business-minded, self-motivated, collaborative, and proactive. This role will provide support for regulatory matters, product innovation, transactional matters, and general legal needs related to HSB’s insurance, reinsurance, and technology business. The Associate Counsel will work closely with internal business and product delivery teams to help advance strategic objectives while protecting the company’s interests and mitigating legal risk.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice and support to internal clients, typically mid-level and below, on basic, limited-scope day-to-day business and legal matters.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis.
  • Work under the direction of more senior attorneys to support legal matters, business initiatives, and regulatory needs.
  • Provide legal and insurance regulatory advice related to development, partnering, and commercialization activities for the company’s insurance and reinsurance business.
  • Support strategic initiatives and provide broad-based general legal support on insurance matters.
  • Assist with transactional matters, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating commercial contracts.
  • Support matters involving admitted and non-admitted insurance products, regulatory oversight, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with internal business partners, product teams, senior attorneys, compliance staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Apply strong legal judgment while balancing legal and regulatory requirements with business goals and objectives.

 

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree required, within one year.
  • Admission to the Connecticut Bar preferred, or eligibility as Authorized In-House Counsel.
  • 3+ years experience demonstrating sound legal judgment with an insurance company or law firm, preferably focused on property/casualty insurance and general corporate work.
  • Experience with insurance regulatory matters, transactional matters, admitted and non-admitted insurance products, business transactions, and commercial contracts preferred.
  • Some expertise in insurance/reinsurance market knowledge, financial and operational acumen, and a strong track record of providing practical legal advice that appropriately balances legal and regulatory requirements with business priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt complex legal topics depending on the audience.
  • Service delivery mindset and ability to develop solutions to complex business problems related to the delivery of legal services.
  • Ability to interact with and develop productive relationships with mid-level management, senior attorneys, and compliance staff.
  • Track record of successful interactions with insurance industry regulators.
  • Strong negotiation, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Detail-oriented, logical, and methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Results-driven self-starter with strong collaboration and influencing skills.
  • Team player with an energetic, positive, and proactive attitude.
  • Financial acumen.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to travel 15–25%, primarily within the United States.
  • Impeccable ethics and integrity.
