Position Overview

Utilize strong underwriting background and market knowledge to support Risk Management and Pricing Support in bringing new VNB to Munich Re and protecting our mortality results. Responsibilities include the management of underwriting related risks on all Individual Life new and inforce business to protect MARC’s profits and reputation by identifying adverse risks and threats and recommending mitigating risk controls.

The role is responsible for ensuring that client  underwriting policies, programs and guidelines are adequately reflected in the reinsurance pricing process. While doing so, it is imperative to maintain effective client relationships conducive to growing and maintaining business while managing to achieve Munich Re’s business objectives.

Evaluate client UW programs for strength of program and discovering potential gaps. Advise pricing team, business development and internal colleagues. Assessments of existing, and development of new programs will have direct impact on proper pricing. Research and achieve expert knowledge on vendor offerings including advantages and challenges with each. Collaborate cross-departmentally to bring process enhancements to our clients generating revenue for the company, including traditional and new cutting edge underwriting tools. Protect our bottom line when evaluating client processes on audits, and advance new sources of business as a subject matter expert when partnership opportunities arise.

 

Your Role:

  • Work directly with client companies developing new UW programs. Counsel clients on all aspects of underwriting and risk management program from the risk selection perspective including third part data tools, best in class rules development, and monitoring techniques leveraging strong technical expertise and market knowledge.
  • Work with external carriers and producers to develop underwriting rules and policies. 
  • Collaborate with team members and across departments to maximize Munich Re Underwriting solution tools, new data sources, and improve technology platform.
  • Manage underwriting related risk controls that are put in place to mitigate risks; for automatic ceded and facultative business.
  • Create and recommend underwriting programs that support the needs of the company. Obtain, analyze and evaluate mortality information, to make appropriate decisions within the scope of authority.
  • Recommend various risk management strategies, guidelines, and programs; suggest changes as needed, and assist with implementation and the monitoring of results.
  • Maintenance and updating of MARC’s MIRA Pro underwriting manual and related processes; recommend strategic goals and objectives and assure those goals are executed.  
  • Collaborate within department to evaluate audit findings, identify risks, and develop strategy with client to implement appropriate solutions.
  • Support large case underwriting and jumbo capacity discussions (experience a plus).
  • Serve as a subject‑matter expert in accelerated underwriting programs, rules, and models for both internal and external audiences
  • Understand and address competitive, regulatory, or other threats, formulate a response, and propose internally as appropriate.
  • Develop and provide new solution education for internal stakeholders.
  • Be a source for business development to solicit intelligence from clients and engage to understand needs and potential underwriting solutions.
  • Apply working knowledge of AI tools, particularly in underwriting decision‑making
  • Represent and promote Munich Re at industry meeting business travel to client’s offices.
  • Display team’s expertise internally and even globally.

 

Your Profile:  

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Industry designation (e.g., FLMI, AALU, FALU) or demonstrated commitment to continuing professional education
  • 8+ years of life underwriting experience including direct life insurer
  • Reinsurance underwriting experience preferred
  • Proven project management experience
  • Expert‑level knowledge of traditional and accelerated underwriting workflows
  • Strong underwriting rules development skills, especially data‑driven approaches
  • Experience with both traditional and non‑traditional underwriting programs
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent client‑facing skills, including face‑to‑face engagement with clients or agents
  • Ability to understand and evaluate vendor contracts
  • Experience delivering presentations or publishing articles is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and a track record of improving processes and client outcomes
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction while collaborating effectively across diverse teams
