Description: 

Munich Re Life US is seeking an experienced disability underwriting professional to serve as a strategic partner in advancing our individual disability income (IDI) growth objectives. This role will combine deep disability underwriting expertise with market knowledge, business development support, client engagement, and innovation leadership to help strengthen Munich Re's position as a premier disability reinsurance partner.

 

The Director, Disability Underwriting Strategy & Market Development, will work closely with underwriting, business development, product, technology, and client stakeholders to identify growth opportunities, drive underwriting innovation, support the adoption of emerging technologies, and enhance Munich Re's thought leadership within the disability marketplace.

 

In addition to supporting current strategic priorities, this role will help build organizational capability and preserve critical disability underwriting expertise to ensure continued market leadership and long-term succession readiness.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

 

Disability Growth Strategy

 

 

  • Support profitable growth initiatives across Individual Disability Income (IDI), Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI), High Limit IDI, Group Long-Term Disability (GLTD), and related living benefits markets.
  • Monitor market trends, competitive developments, emerging products, and distribution strategies impacting the disability marketplace.
  • Partner with underwriting and business development teams to identify and evaluate new growth opportunities.
  • Provide strategic insights that enhance Munich Re's market position and client value proposition.

 

Client and Market Leadership

 

 

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for disability underwriting and living benefits solutions.
  • Participate in client meetings, industry conferences, and strategic initiatives to strengthen relationships and support business development efforts.
  • Collaborate with clients to explore underwriting innovations, process improvements, and emerging market opportunities.
  • Represent Munich Re as a thought leader within the disability underwriting community.

 

Underwriting Innovation and Transformation

 

 

  • Partner with disability underwriting leadership to advance automated underwriting, artificial intelligence, and digital underwriting initiatives.
  • Help identify and implement innovative solutions that improve underwriting efficiency, consistency, and customer experience.
  • Support initiatives involving tools and platforms such as MIRA Pro, Sixfold, Alitheia, and future underwriting technologies.
  • Evaluate emerging underwriting methodologies and recommend opportunities for adoption.

 

Strategic Project Leadership

 

 

  • Lead or support cross-functional projects that advance disability underwriting and living benefits strategies.
  • Coordinate efforts across underwriting, product, business development, technology, and operations teams.
  • Drive execution of strategic initiatives from concept through implementation.
  • Promote organizational alignment and change management for key initiatives.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

 

  • 8+ years of disability underwriting experience within a carrier, reinsurer, brokerage, consulting organization, or related insurance environment.
  • Deep knowledge of Individual Disability Income (IDI) underwriting and disability insurance products.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders and lead initiatives without direct managerial authority.
  • Proven ability to manage complex projects and strategic initiatives.
  • Experience with underwriting automation, artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, or digital transformation initiatives.

 

 

Preferred:

 

 

  • Expertise in Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI), High Limit IDI, Group Disability, or related living benefits products.
  • Industry recognition through conference participation, speaking engagements, publication, or market leadership activities.
  • Reinsurance experience.
  • Professional insurance designations or advanced education.

The base salary range anticipated for this position is $160,000 to $185,000, plus an opportunity for an annual company bonus based upon a percentage of eligible pay.
