The 2nd Vice President of Underwriting will manage the production underwriting operations of our traditional facultative underwriting services. This leadership role is responsible for ensuring underwriting excellence, managing risk selection, and fostering strong carrier company relationships. The role will collaborate with Underwriting Risk Management, Medical, Actuarial, Claims, and Reinsurance Administration teams to deliver profitable and competitive facultative underwriting support while maintaining the highest standards of technical expertise and market responsiveness.

 

Responsibilities:

Subject matter expert in area of life underwriting for individual life applications for term, perm, and survivorship product lines. Preferred experience includes underwriting in the reinsurance space with a solid understanding of both direct and brokerage markets. You will manage and support underwriters in assessing the medical, financial, and lay risk for routine to highly complex cases, and assign the proper risk class and communicate underwriting decisions to the carrier company underwriters. You will provide technical support to the underwriting team through case file management and review, and education and training of underwriters through mentorship. You will participate in and assist in the execution of the strategic direction of the facultative underwriting unit.

 

You will become a key contact for our client companies for day-to-day business as well as external client engagement events.  This will involve limited travel to deliver presentations, representing Munich Re at industry events and carrier partners.

 

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of underwriters, and admin staff fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Able to work through difficult formal and informal cases by reviewing medical records, medical exams, financial documents, telephone interviews, and other underwriting requirements to determine proper risk class assessment observing company guidelines.
  • Properly document risk assessment information and underwriting decisions within system application.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions with carrier company underwriters with technical confidence and acumen.
  • Build and foster strong relationships with carrier companies underwriting management teams.
  • Volunteer or participate on department projects as assigned and share knowledge/mentor other underwriters.
  • Represent the company in industry events, conferences, and carrier company offices.
  • Stay informed of market trends, competitor offerings, and regulatory changes impacting life insurance.
  • Support innovation in underwriting processes, leveraging technology and data analytics to enhance efficiency and decision-making.

 

What you bring:

  • 10+ years of experience required: Life underwriting, reinsurance experience preferred, along with prior people management experience.
  • Four-year degree: Preferred in business, sciences, or medical fields of study or equivalent work experience
  • Industry designations or work towards: FALU, CLU, FLMI.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Solid understanding of insurance market dynamics, reinsurance structures, and regulatory requirements.
